As conversations around fluoride resurface across the country, including a new bill introduced in the Ohio House to ban fluoride from municipal drinking water, Water and Health Advisory Councilmember Joseph Cotruvo urges lawmakers and communities to look to the science.
“We’re talking about very low levels here for added fluoride” Cotruvo said in his interview with WTOL11. “What might be a problem for pregnant women or children is much, much higher levels.”
He noted that while concerns about neurodevelopmental impacts often stem from international studies in high-exposure areas, these findings don’t reflect the conditions or concentrations used in U.S. systems. The CDC, WHO, and decades of peer-reviewed research continue to support the safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation.
