EPA Reaffirms 4 ppt Limit: The U.S. EPA has maintained strict limits of 4 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and PFOS in drinking water. A new federal exemption standard is being developed for rural and small communities. Water systems now have until 2031, an additional two years, to meet these federal requirements. It is unclear whether the agency can uphold these changes in the rule given legal limitations.

Compliance Deadline Extended: Even with the extended compliance deadlines, cities and water systems – particularly those with PFOA or PFOS concentrations just at or below 4 ppt – are already under pressure to decide whether they will implement treatment systems in order to meet the original compliance deadline, diverting funds from necessary infrastructure and public health protections in drinking water today.
